Western bean cutworm is a native North American pest that feeds mainly on corn and dry beans. Its historical geographic range covered states in the western Great Plains, but since 1999 this rapidly expanded rapidly eastward across the corn belt. In the last few years, larval infestations have caused significant economic damage to both corn and dry beans in Indiana, Michigan and Ontario. This talk summarizes western bean cutworm biology, ecology, scouting, and management, with particular reference to the Great Lakes region. A summary paper on this insect was published in the free online Journal of Integrated Pest Management.
